Professional Involvement

Michael is co-author of Watson & McGowan, Ontario Civil Practice, now in its 27th edition, and has been editor-in-chief of Carswell's Practice Cases since 1984. For a three year term from 1992 to 1995 Michael served on the Class Proceedings Committee established under the Law Society Act initially as Vice-Chair and subsequently as Chair. Michael is a frequent contributor to continuing legal education programs regarding class actions and civil procedure.

Michael McGowan is counsel to Theall Group LLP. He has practiced civil litigation since his call to the bar in 1980 and focuses on Class Action Litigation. Michael has been certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a Specialist in Civil Litigation since 1989. He has appeared in all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada.

Michael has acted as counsel in many class actions including Godi v. TTC (subway crash), Garland v. Consumers Gas (usury), Gagne v. Silcorp (mass wrongful dismissal), Mangan v. Inco (sulphur dioxide leak), Robertson v. Thomson (copyright infringement), Anderson v. Wilson (Hepatitis B outbreak), Hollick v. Metro Toronto (dump nuisance), Atkinson v. Ault Foods Ltd. (employees’ benefits), Bywater v. TTC (subway fire), Guglietti v. Go Transit (train crash), Webb v. K-Mart (mass wrongful dismissal), Doshi v. Bulk Barn (franchise dispute), McNaughton Automotive Limited v. The Co-operators (insurance policy interpretation), Maguire v. Algoma District Medical Group (contaminated medical equipment), Rose v. Pettle (medical malpractice) and Walker v. Union Gas (usury). Michael has appeared at all levels of court including appearing before the Supreme Court of Canada in four appeals arising from various class actions, and winning three out of four.
